Forgive us for sounding cliched, but we think everyone should have the opportunity to get the career they want. Everyone has a passion in life, something they’ve always wanted to do, but many of us get caught up in the daily grind and find ourselves slipping further away from our ambitions.
A career has a natural progression, you’ll build up skills, and will be promoted to higher levels within a company. Whereas a job is something that pays the rent and might not necessarily be enjoyable or interesting. You might not develop the level of skill you would as part of a career, and it can feel as if you’re stuck in a job you don’t enjoy.
First of all, we have ALL been there! Most people will have to take jobs they don’t want, and don’t enjoy. So try and stay positive, there is a way out. It really is never too late to start a new career and fulfill your dreams.
Careers advice
In a career, your goal is to not only get the task done but it’s also to learn skills, gain experiences, build connections, and put yourself in position for promotions, raises, and possibly similar positions in other organizations.
In other words, you should be inserting some emotional energy into a career. You should be looking for ways that you can get promotions, raises, bonuses, and useful resume-building skills and experience. This means always going the extra mile and doing tasks that are beyond your minimum job description, building positive relationships with the people around you, and more.
You should fight hard for career until you get the level of success that you want. That doesn't mean alienating other pieces of your life. If there, and getting to work means setting a professional goal figuring our what you have to go to get.
Advice on Jobs
If your employment situation sounds more like a job than a career, try not to let it overcome you. See it as a means to an end. In the current climate, won't be forever. Turn up for work on time, do the tasks required of you, and being employed is a good thing, so make sure you remind yourself that it focuses on the things you enjoy doing, such as studying the subject you are interested in and seeing family, etc.
One thing which is very important to remember is that you will need a reference from your current employer, so just because it’s not what you want to do forever, don’t slack off! A good reference is extremely valuable and will help you to achieve the career you desire.
